[ELI5] The difference between an AM4 and AM5 motherboard?

I’m trying to put together a build for my first gaming desktop and I don’t quite understand the intricacies of a motherboard. AM4 is the current standard but AM5 is either out or coming out and I can’t figure out what would be better for me.

Others have addressed the socket issue so I’ll take a shot at the “I can’t figure out what would be better for me” part of your post.

First, you’d probably get much better support in a sub specific to this question. Check out r/buildapc

Second, the motherboard that makes the most sense for you is a function of budget. Are you buying a top of the line GPU? Then you should probably target a similarly capable CPU and compatible motherboard.
Are you planning to overclock your hardware? If so, you’ll need to buy a motherboard and CPU that is aligned with this goal.
Are you planning to play older games with lower spec requirements? You can get by with lower priced or mid range hardware.

Good Luck!
