[ELI5] The difference between an AM4 and AM5 motherboard?

I’m trying to put together a build for my first gaming desktop and I don’t quite understand the intricacies of a motherboard. AM4 is the current standard but AM5 is either out or coming out and I can’t figure out what would be better for me.

AM4 and AM5 are the type of socket for the CPU. Which one you need depends on whicu CPU you are getting.

A Ryzen 1000, 2000, 3000 or 5000 CPU will only fit in an AM4 motherboard.

A Ryzen 7000 series CPU (and presumably the next 2-4 future generations) will only fit on an AM5 motherboard

You seem to have wandered in through the wrong door. You were probably looking for /r/buildapc or /r/techsupport.

AM4 and AM5 are socket types for the CPU. As in, the physical plug the CPU goes on on the motherboard. So you buy whatever board matches the CPU you’re buying.

Also, AM5 is not “the current standard”. It’s only for AMD CPUs. Buy an Intel CPU and you’ll find it doesn’t fit at all.

You know how our computer has different parts, like a brain, a heart, and other important parts? Well, one of those parts is called the motherboard. It’s like the computer’s backbone, because all the other parts connect to it.
Now, some motherboards are made for one kind of brain, while others are made for a different kind of brain. And that’s where the AM4 and AM5 come in. They’re just different types of motherboards that work with different kinds of brains, sort of like how some toys need AA batteries and others need AAA batteries.
So, just like we have different kinds of shoes for different occasions, computers have different kinds of motherboards for different kinds of brains.
