“Conflict-averse” means that a person has a much higher than typical dislike of interpersonal conflict. This means that they will do whatever it takes to avoid conflict, even to the point of suffering harm to themselves. As a trivial example, a conflict-averse person will just eat the Filet-o-fish even though they ordered a Big Mac because they don’t want the “conflict” of pointing out that their order is wrong. As to how one becomes that way, it is the same as any other personality trait: a combination of environment, upbringing, and genetics.
