Freelance refers to an employment arrangement where you don’t work through an agency. Nobody is in charge of scheduling you, bringing you business, or negotiating on your behalf (unless you hire them yourself to do it). Contracts are usually on a job-by-job basis.

A variable hour contract means you’ll get paid for hours you work, but there’s no set number of hours you work in a billing period. These contracts tend to be time-based more commonly than project-based. Freelancers can do this, and they can also do fixed bid or time & materials contracts.
