Variable Hour contracts treat you more like a regular employee than freelance work. You’ll be expected to work the hours you are scheduled/given, potentially access to sick pay or maternity leave, employee discounts, and so on.

Freelancers are in charge of everything on their end. A company isn’t obligated to give them any kind of perk or benefit or status, but you’re also free to work when and how you want, as long as you meet your end goals.

They’re similar on paper, but zero hour contracts have less individual freedom with the trade-off being more protection/perks from the company.
