After painstakingly installing printer drivers for a thermal printer at work I realized I still don’t truly understand what I was installing. (Bonus points if you can cover video card drivers too cause idk what drivers are In that sense either)

Imagine you make a printer. The printer needs to tell the computer “I’m a printer”. The drivers do that, and also tell the computer how to print with the printer.
Now say you make a new printer with a brand new feature. Now you write a new driver to support that feature instead of the operating system developer.
