Eli5: What are real and non real roots?

I keep googling it and I still don’t understand what they are and their differences 😭😭

Real:

2*2 = 4(2^2)

-2*-2 = 4(-2^2)

Imaginary:

What is = √-4

A square root cannot be real if it is negative because that is not possible.

You can solve with a variable but its not real in graphs when using formulas.

i = √-1

√-4 = √4 * √-1 = 2i
