It’s well known that drugs such as antidepressants (particularly SSRIs) and benzodiazepines suppress REM sleep,it’s also well known that REM sleep is crucial for memory, cognition, consolidation of memory and many other important functions,my question is what are the long term outcomes of drugs that suppress REM?

My experience: I’ve used antidepressants, cannabis and alcohol for my sleeping problems.
Worst was alcohol. Made me see weird dreams, restless nights and pink elephants. Sometimes right before falling asleep I would stop breathing or wake up in terror (same sober when in a higly anxious state)
Then comes sleepingpills/antidepressants I slept yes, but no REM, well sometimes nightmares, most of the time I’d just wake up feeling anxious, tired and physically ill.
Cannabis has helped me to get sleep, fall asleep and stay asleep. I don’t remember dreams everynight but I know I’ve dreamt. I wake up waaaaay more rested after hitting gravitybong than taking pharmacy-drugs.

Could different people have different reaction to these? Maybe some needs a lower doze on THC to sleep better and others a little heavier on benzos?

Edit: and my memory is pretty much the same.
