ELi5: What are those floating bacteria like things that appear in the human eye?

My optometrist JUST told me this the other day. He said when you’ve been using your eyes for an extended period of time, the fluid in your eyes start to clump. So if you ever ‘see’ little hazy organisms floating around, that’s typically what that is. I think that is what you’re referring to.

These are harmless usually. These “floaters” aren’t in the surface of your eye. They are in the viscous fluid inside your eye. They are made of old eye cells or tissues that have died naturally. They will be removed by your eye by itself. If severe or lasts a week, see a doctor.

Most likely “floaters” as noted in other comments, if they are always in the same place in your visual field, it could also be the beginnings of a cataract in the actual lens.

Usually benign clumps formed from the fluid inside your eyes.

No cause for concern unless there’s a sudden and pronounced increase.
