Eli5: what are ‘whippets’ and how exactly are they dangerous?

I’ve heard some about them from recent resurgences of people trying to sell them, as well as vague information about them being dangerous but I have yet to see any in-depth explanation as to how specifically they’re dangerous.

Assuming you’re not talking about the awesome dog breed, the drug version of whippets involve inhaling – or “huffing” – nitrous oxide, which restricts oxygen flow to the brain. Generally speaking, restricting oxygen to the brain in an uncontrolled manner is a bad thing.
