The damp smell on clothes that have been left in the washing machine overnight is caused by a combination of bacteria and mould. When clothes are left in a damp environment, such as a washing machine that has not been emptied after a wash cycle, they can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. These microorganisms thrive in damp conditions and produce a musty, damp smell. The smell is most noticeable on clothes that have been left in the machine overnight because this gives the bacteria and mould plenty of time to grow and multiply. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to empty the washing machine as soon as possible after a wash cycle and to keep the machine clean and well-ventilated. This will help to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould, and will keep your clothes smelling fresh and clean.

I use a scoop of oxyclean in with my detergent when this happens. Takes the smell away without adding any additional scent
