Eli5 what direction does air go when a bird takes off

I always thought the air would be blown outward, but isn’t that only when they land. Or do they (stupid question inbound) pull air in the take off
I have been thinking about this for days lol

Flying for birds is similar to how humans swim in water. We push against the water in order to propel ourselves.

Birds’ wings push against the air in order to generate lift and fly.

Like an airplane the net movement of air is always opposite to the direction the bird moves.
