Eli5: What do people mean when they say there “trying”?

When a couple days they are trying for a baby what does that mean? I never understood it. Does it mean they used to not have sex? Is baby sex different from normal sex?

“trying” might mean a lot of things.
There are often stages or degrees of “trying”

The most basic level is they simply stop doing whatever they were doing to avoid pregnancy. That may have been condoms, birth control pills, abstinence, the pull out method, or timing sex to avoid the fertility window. They just have sex freely and see what happens.

If they don’t randomly luck into a baby they may move up to activly tracking her cycle and possibly using a thermometer or test strips to find out exactly when she is ovulating, the absolute best time to have sex and possibly get pregnant.

If the more precise trying doesn’t work, they get to move up to talking to doctors. Both partners may get tested to see how fertile they actually are. If their tests look good, they can go back to trying and it’s just luck, if their tests show any issues, there are medical steps to take. Fertility drugs and lifestyle changes to maximize the odds.

If that still isn’t working the couple might be undergoing IVF.

“trying” might mean any of these things and it’s extremely personal which is probably why the term is so broad. You don’t need to know what level they are at unless they want you to know.
