Eli5: What do people mean when they say there “trying”?

When a couple days they are trying for a baby what does that mean? I never understood it. Does it mean they used to not have sex? Is baby sex different from normal sex?

I mean I guess it depends what “normal sex” is to you – “normal” sex for many couples involves actively trying to avoid pregnancy, either thanks to what exactly they do (nobody is going to get pregnant from oral sex, for instance) or using some sort of contraception (eg condom, pill, IUD). But if a penis is ejaculating inside a vagina with no form of contraception, then there’s a decent chance of a pregnancy being the result. Doing that from time to time is the bare minimum of what “trying for a baby” entails. If that doesn’t yield the desired results, then maybe they’ll try to do it more often, time it with ovulation/fertility cycles, etc.
