You know how movies look really glamorous and simple conversations look theatrical? ever wondered why a normally benign scene suddenly has a certain drama to it, based on the angle it was filmed at? Ever wondered why a boring interview or music video becomes engaging?
It’s the cinematographers job to make change our normal POV perspective and write the story via the camera angles and transitions.
The director says what they want the imagery to look like.
The Cinematographer figures out what combination of lenses, cameras, and lighting will produce that look.
The camera operator makes the camera record the imagery.
