[eli5] What does “Assumption of costs” exactly mean, coming from a company that would dine in a restaurant?

“Kostenübernahme” in German, I kept hearing it and really want to know what it exactly means, as in, what would the company do with that information and what steps do they take after the bill?

In English, “assume” can mean “take on”.

When you “assume the role of manager” at work, that means you take on the job of being manager.

When a company “assumes the cost” at a restaurant, that means they are taking on the cost of the meal. Aka the company will pay the restaurant bill, so the meal is free for the people eating.
