eli5 what does it mean for sound to travel faster in denser mediums while wave velocity decreases in denser mediums

I’ll just use water as the dense medium. Sound will travel faster through water due to it being less compressive than air, but at the same time the water also being denser than air will cause it to require more energy to get through. You end up with a sound wave that travels faster, but is stopped quicker.
