eli5: what does ‘positive skew’ and ‘negative skew’ mean in a case such as test scores

i understand that it means the mean was either higher/lower than the average. i think. but what does that MEAN like why does it matter??? help

Positive skew means the test was difficult and the average was a 40 / 100 but the class still had some smartypants that aced the test

Negative skew means the test was pretty easy and the average was an 85 / 100 but the class still had some dumdums who flunked it.
