Eli5 what does the phrase “love to hate” mean. I’ve only heard it regarding characters in tv/movies/books/etc. How can you enjoy hating something?

Some people get a kick out of dumping on something. Like The Bachelor for instance. A lot of people don’t like the show on merit, but they like watching the show and going, “Ah gaddamnit Kathy! My god! Listen to this shithead talk!! [gestures at television] Yer fackin’ stupid!”
