eli5 what exactly does it mean when a car has a sport mode or model, when in reality its not a sports car and was not made for sport ?

Sports mode is a switch that tells the computer that controls the transmission and fuel systems to prefer slightly more power over slightly more efficiency. It’ll push more gas to the engine in certain situations, shift differently, things like that.
A sport model on the other hand, is a variant of a car with sort of the same idea, more power and performance at the cost of efficiency, but it accomplishes that by having different hardware rather than different software.
