eli5 what exactly does it mean when a car has a sport mode or model, when in reality its not a sports car and was not made for sport ?

I had a rental van a while back that had sport mode. It was basically just the automatic transmission getting a little bit tighter. Shifting at a higher rpm and it was more snappy changing gears. Thats about it, I didnt notice anything else whatsoever.
