eli5 what exactly does it mean when a car has a sport mode or model, when in reality its not a sports car and was not made for sport ?

Sport models are mostly a marketing gimmick, to make people pay a premium for a car that looks or sounds more like a sports car
Sport models of a road car might have a more powerful engine, better breaks, and an aero upgrade like a rear wing
Or it might be a ‘just-for-looks’ rear wing and slightly different trim package… it really depends on the car and manufacturer.
A sport mode is a different matter. This is a button that changes the engine mapping to give you more engine power at the expense of fuel economy and comfort.
