eli5: What exactly does the Large Hadron Collider do, and why are people so freaked out about it?

Bonus points if you can explain why people are freaking out about CERN activating it during the eclipse specifically. I don’t understand how these can be related in any way.

It’s the physicists’ equivalent of cave men smashing rocks together. They smash subatomic particles together to study the even smaller particles that they “break” into.

People have blamed things like the Mandela effect on the LHC, claiming it has created alternate timelines. These folk are always concerned when it runs a test, the fact its happening during a solar eclips with a “devil commet” its more than enough ammo to spin up theroies.

This and the fact that Isreal is literally trying to usher in the apocalypse (look up red heifer) and all the other weird things people are digging up about the eclipse, like how in 1811 a full eclipse passed over this same spot (new Madrid fault line) which caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards and a whole bunch of other odd geological events.

People are just connecting dots that may not belong together because so much wild shit is going on. It’s a way to try and make sense of it all.

Lots of great answers here, mainly about what the LHC is and does (and isn’t/doesn’t). My response to those who worry about it is to direct them to this site: [https://www.hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/](https://www.hasthelargehadroncolliderdestroyedtheworldyet.com/)

There’s always a negligible chance that one of these high energy experiments could potentially destroy the world.

Similarly there was a small chance that the first test of a fission bomb would produce a chain reaction that would consume the entire earth. By the time they t este it they thought it was very unlikely, but the odds were still greater than 0. (See Oppenheimer movie for a dramatization of this.)

So the people worrying are mostly idiots, but there’s always a tiny chance.
