Eli5: What exactly is PS RAM?

277 viewsOtherTechnology

I’ve been researching the Nintendo DS hardware, and I came across its Ram. It says it has 4MB of PS Ram. After looking it up online, I can’t really find any simple answers as to what it is? Is it specially designed Ram for the DS? If so, what makes it different?

[Pseudo Static RAM](https://www.copetti.org/writings/consoles/nintendo-ds/#main-memory). [Here’s a good article](https://www.technipages.com/what-is-psdram-pseudo-static-ram/) which explains what DRAM, SRAM, and PSRAM are.

But basically DRAM is cheaper & more readily available, SRAM is faster but far more expensive. PSRAM is also cheap like and faster than DRAM, but comes with its own downsides which is why it’s not that commonly used.

It’s pseudostatic RAM.

It’s DRAM with a self refresh circuit.

DRAM is more cost effective by density so Nintendo saves some money by using DRAM with the self refresh circuit without sacrificing too much performance by simulating static RAM with the refresh circuit.
