when a person is in a catatonic state due to mental disorders such as schizophrenia, what are they typically experiencing? are they just in deep thought, or are they being distracted by hallucinations and delusions? what prevents them from moving in long periods of time?

People tend not to remember the experience of catatonia well. Of those that do remember, a large fraction describe it as having been taken over by intense fear and anxiety or other negative emotion, to the point that they didn’t really notice they weren’t moving. Some do remember hallucinations/delusions.

Know that catatonia isn’t just a symptom of schizophrenia, but can be caused by various psychiatric and general medical causes.
