I was watching an interview with a celebrity, and she said that after the red carpet she had to return the clothes she was wearing. This got me interested in the ownership and housing of these designer, couture clothing. What happens to the Met Gala gowns after the event? What about the clothes celebrities wear during the press tour for their projects? Do they keep them? Who pays for them? Do they get reused?

It really depends on the clothing and events. Red carpet usually means the stylist gets dresses from several different designers along with accessories and they use that to put the look together for the event. Everything is returned to whoever loaned out the things at the end of the event. Its great publicity for the designers to get mentioned on the red carpet so its advertising for them.
For tours and other things its usually a mix of clothes the person owns and pieces gifted by designers for advertising. Depending on the celebrity their management company foots some of the bill but since celebrities have money they purchase things too.
Depends… sometimes the celeb keeps them, sometimes they go back to the designer for their archive, sometimes they get auctioned off for charity.
About 20 years ago, I worked for an online auction site and we ran a charity auction for Oscars outfits. One of the included dresses was [Bjork’s famous swan dress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swan_dress). We had these dresses in the office and one of my co-workers actually put the swan dress on and modeled it for the rest of our department! Too bad that was before cell phones had cameras, etc. to document it
Some clothing gets saved for posterity, you can see it on display in an exhibit or maybe Hard Rock Cafe. 😅 Some pieces are auctioned off for charity. Some artists I follow worked with a clothing company focused on sustainability. They had a line that included patches of fabric from the artists’ outfits.
