Eli5: What happens to power grids and electrical infrastructure during floods? whay about wiring in houses? Do they just need to all be replaced or something else?

Most electrical infrastructure is either well above ground (on power poles) or underground. So long as the power poles are still standing, it’ll be fine. If the power poles get destroyed, then you’re likely going to have to repair wires as they may be destroyed as well.

Both types of wires are insulated against water egress so would be “unaffected” by being underwater.

Houses are different. You would likely need to replace any sort of exposed contact that came into contact with the water. (Think plugs that are close to the ground/floor.)

But honestly in flooded houses you have a lot more to deal with than the electricity.
