eli5 What happens to the art and exhibits when a museum closes or shuts down?

They are transferred to a different location, or sold/donated away. A lot of the art you see in museums belongs to private owners, but they allow the museum to show it. Those private owners would get their pieces back. Some museums are state owned. For example, the French government owns the Louvre. If the Louvre had to shut down for whatever reason, the state would collect its pieces and distribute them elsewhere.
I’d assume an auction? Probably at a loss if they weren’t drawing enough attention to stay afloat lol.
