eli5: What happens when women suffer from PMS?

I know all the hormones are responsible for PMS, but I’m wondering what **exactly** causes the mood swings, depressive episodes etc.

And why are these symptoms so strong right before the menstruation, and as soon as the period starts, they go away? Or at least with some women, they go away. I know other women suffer also during menstruation.

PMS mood swings and depressive episodes are caused by changes in hormone levels, specifically estrogen and progesterone. These hormones can affect chemicals in the brain that regulate mood. Symptoms can be stronger just before menstruation because hormone levels drop at this time. As soon as menstruation starts, these symptoms may disappear due to hormonal changes and the release of “feel-good” chemicals. Not all women experience severe PMS symptoms, and there are treatments available to help manage symptoms.
