A piezo is essentially a transducer that produces an electrical charge in response to vibration, the “piezoelectric effect”

Rather than picking up the vibration of the strings with a traditional magnetic pickup, a piezo guitar uses piezoelectric sensors under the bridge saddles that instead pick up the actual physical vibrations of the strings, producing a more natural acoustic tone.
