ELI5-What is a welt (like after scratch that doesn’t go deep enough to bleed)?

(Not looking for medical advice, just terminology)

Is it just simple inflammation with some fluid sent in to clean up? Though, that’s just another way to describe bleeding. Haha!

[From what I can gather, ](https://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/welt)it is any sort of inflammation that originated from a sting, or an allergic reaction to a food, drug or insect bite and is usually presented alongside itching

It’s a reaction of the body to defend against a minor injury. The wound may not produce blood but it could be severe enough to expose near-raw living cells that react to foreign body exposure; they may ooze “cellular juice” but not blood. Could also be swelling from a bruise because of the high concentrated force at the point of contact.
