Very few of the fruits and vegetables we consume today appear in nature. They are results of selective breeding over thousands of years. However, with modern science we can accelerate this process by analyzing and selecting the specific genes in order to give fruits and vegetables distinctive traits, rather than gradually selecting the desired fruits over generations. We can even include genetic material from other species to produce different results.
Last summer I bought a cantaloupe that was kind of oblong shaped and had a weird seed structure at my local vegetable stand. The vendor said that it was a hybridized with a pumpkin/squash to make it grow larger than it otherwise would.
