*Cybersecurity*, *Information Security* and *IT Security* are related terms with sometimes a lot of overlap, but a specific focus.

*IT Security* focusses on securing IT assets, mainly technology and infrastructure. (Servers, networks, …) Both physical and virtual assets.

*Information Security* focusses on protecting the business information. Ensuring files are secured, which requires the IT systems are secure, but also covers the business processes handling these information assets, etc.

*Cybersecurity* is even more general and is the practice of deploying people, policies, processes and technologies to keep it secure.

You lock your doors, your windows, and you tell your kids not to open the door to strangers. Maybe you have an alarm system. Cyber security is the same thing. You set up firewalls that block outsiders, you teach people not to click on random email messages, and you limit the damage if someone does. You monitor incoming and outgoing traffic to spot any irregularities.

Cyber is a term that means “related to computers, computer networks, the internet.” Cybersecurity deals with ways to protect against hacking, viruses, intercepted emails or texts, protecting your passwords and information stored on computing devices, etc.

Just as there’s crime in real life, there’s crime in the computers / internet realm too, information theft, hacking, attacks to disable websites or servers, etc. etc. Cybersecurity focuses on protections against that.
