Eli5: what is “E”? I find it used in numbers that are mind bogglingly large, but I don’t know what it really means.

In the context you are referring to, E just means “times 10 to the power of”
So 1,000 = 1E3 because 1 “times 10 to the power of” 3 = 1 x 10^(3) = 1 x 1,000 = 1,000.
It’s a way to condense very large/small numbers down.
