Hypermetabolism is when the body begins to consume and needs excess energy compared to one’s typical resting metabolic consumption of energy. Hypermetabolism is most often triggered by traumatic events or illness when excess energy is needed to repair/rebuild to return to a normal state of being. If one cannot pull from banks of stored calories, hypermetabolism will affect normal function, as certain “non-essential”, a term I use loosely, functions of the body are reduced. Such as in old people who get ill, they’re more prone to medical delirium and hallucinations/mental fog because their brain is getting less energy in lieu of the body sending that energy to their immune system to fight infection, something the body seems more critical/urgent.
