ELI5- What is it that makes light flicker instead of just going out?

If they’re flickering electricity is still getting to them and they still are capable of producing light so why can’t they just shine continuously until they burn out?

When the electricity that powers your light bulb is not flowing smoothly, the light flickers. It can also be because the light’s too old and there is a problem within the internal wiring that transfer the energy from the current in your home to the little shiny thing inside. It depends on context.

If the energy is not flowing smoothly, the light will work with what it receives at the interval it receives, so, if your energy is going out and back on really fast, your light is going out and back on really fast. This happens because your light is incapable of holding energy.

If the light is flickering but your other lamps aren’t, or, if you’re 100% sure that the energy is flowing correctly, it might be because your light is not properly screwed, or it is just too old to operate at its optimal performance, leaving it so that the components inside are worn-out.

TL;DR: Your light may flicker because your energy’s not working correctly or because it is too old and something’s wearing out inside.
