For your example, the two different types of molecules have some attraction for each other. This means they will take up less space together than they do by themselves.

Think of a room full of people, all fans of some celebrity or whatever. By themselves, these people will spread out to be comfortable. This is like your pure water. For simplicity let’s say they spread out evenly and take up the entire space.

If the celebrity they are waiting for (the alcohol) shows up, you can see how the attraction will cause the entire arrangement to take up less space as they crowd together to be near the celebrity.
