Like when parents set up a trust for their kids. Is probate when there’s disagreement or one sibling does not accept terms of the trust or will?

“Probate” comes from the Latin verb *probare* which means to try, test, prove, or examine.

Probate is the process of validating a will and ensuring that it has been executed in accordance with the deceased person’s wishes.

For example, let’s say your dad had $100,000 in his bank account, and when he died, he wanted to leave it all to you. The bank may require you to probate his will before they’ll give you the cash, so you actually have to go to court and get a judge to rule that the will is legitimate and you’re entitled to those funds.
