) which relates the gut microbiome to brain structure in schizophrenia patients. The paper uses the term “regional homogeneity” so often throughout the paper without explaining what it means, and my attempts to research it only leave me more confused. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regional homogeneity seems to be a way for them to compare fMRI mappings between different regions and giving them an index of connectivity during cognitive task. Then they’re comparing that with prevalence of a bacterial species.
Not an expert on fMRI data analysis at all, but will help where I can.
Interesting paper though.
