Social Engineering is the process of getting someone to do something you want them to do – usually through deception.
You usually “engineer” personalities and personas. This is called pretexting i.e: Pretexting as a Janitor or security personnel to get into a company you don’t work for.
It’s basically advanced manipulation and exploits people’s trust and good will factor to get something.
Usually vital information and confidential information which can be used to carry out further attacks.

It doesn’t only apply to the IT world as it uses real psychology, social engineering can be found in dating and with con men among other places.
