Rock descended from/is Rock’n’roll as in “rocking to and fro” because it was music to dance to. You could consider all the others a subset of rock, but naming is mostly just fashion of the times. It’s pretty much anything with drums, electric guitar, bass guitar, and a singer.

Hard rock is harder than rock. It’s generally pretty slow though? Deeper bass?

Metal is harder than hard rock. Typically faster. More wailing guitars.

Pop is generally softer than rock, but it’s whatever’s popular. It’s supposed to shift with the times, but honestly it’s been pretty static for the last ~25 years. That or I’ve gotten old.

The hard-soft spectrum of music, softer music is more “melodic” music is, slower, notes are allowed to fade rather than get cut off. Harder music uses more high-pass filters distorting the note removing that “melodic” sound and making it more jarring.
