Eli5: What is the difference between soldering and welding?

Welding = fusion of the same metals via heat to create a weld pool. All metals change state within the controlled weld pool.
Soldering = using a different alloy with a lower melting point than the base metals.
The solder is drawn into the joint via capillary action and alloys to the surface of the base metals
