Eli5: What is the difference between sun cream and sun oil?

In particular, if they are both the same SPF, let’s say SPF30 for this example..

I could be wrong but i believe the sun cream/lotion is meant to block most of the sun, keeping sensitive white skin from burning, while oil on the other hand protects less but allows you to tan better

Different carriers. Oil is normally, well oil and cream is a mixture of things, like water and ingredients and emulsifier (that makes it possible to mix water with non waterbased products)

Oil is heavier than the cream, cream lighter as more water/less ingredients. Cream is generally more absorbing, many oils stay on top – difference in shine or blocking of pores by oils
