eli5: What is the purpose and/or advantage of multiple cameras and lenses on a phone?

As the title suggests, I don’t understand how this works.

On a mobile device, moving parts are generally highly undesirable, so an interchangeable lens system can’t be used.

Instead, multiple cameras as used to provide the benefits of multiple lenses, allowing for features such as wide angle shots or telephoto lenses to be available.
