ELi5: What is the purpose of Levers & Cranks on electrical breakers, and why are they necessary?

I am familiar with a regular breaker, but I don’t have enough knowedge to understand the differences.

Electrical contacts need a bit of pressure behind them in order to conduct electricity well. Also there needs to be force behind it to yank the contacts open quickly when tripped to minimize arcing and pull potentially partially welded connections open.

With a small 20A breaker it doesn’t take too much and you can easily supply it by flipping a small lever by hand.

Big breakers need a lot more force so as an alternative to just using a big lever a few feet long may let you charge a spring with multiple pulls on a shorter lever.

The crank is for racking in/racking out a breaker which physically connects it to the bus. It’s like plugging in a smaller breaker.
