Eli5: What is the quota system that Bangladeshi people have started protesting against?

Apparently after a long time of built up frustration people (mostly students) are finally getting out on the streets to protest against the ‘quota system’, but Google really doesn’t help at all explaining what the hell that is.

Answer: Government jobs in Bangladesh are highly prestigious and lucrative. In the current quota system 30% of government jobs are reserved for family and descendants of those who took part in the Bangladeshi Liberation War. Students are protesting perceived unjust prioritizations over events 3 generations back

In addition to the general unfairness, family and descendants of the veterans are very likely to be apart of the current party in power, the AL. The AL was one of the major players in Bangladeshes’s independence. The AL has been criticized and characterized as authoritarian, so corruption accusations are apart of the protests too
