Eli5: What is the quota system that Bangladeshi people have started protesting against?

Apparently after a long time of built up frustration people (mostly students) are finally getting out on the streets to protest against the ‘quota system’, but Google really doesn’t help at all explaining what the hell that is.

People who fought in their war of independence were labeled as freedom fighters.

The families of freedom fighters get first pick for jobs they apply for… I think it’s mostly government jobs. This is the “quota” system. Descendants of freedom fighters get these jobs first.

This puts non-freedom fighter family lines on the back burner. It also doesn’t help that government jobs (like the police) are among those jobs freedom fighter families will get.

So the people in charge of cracking down on the protests are the people who are most prone to being offended by the protests and wanting them erased to begin with.
