Basically the actors union want to change residual rights (that is payments paid for a show being watched years later) to include streaming services.

That’s the key part of the dispute. There’s a few side issues like ai generated images but those are smaller issues.

Though we think of Hollywood actors getting paid massive amounts and getting great deals through their agents, not all actors receive that.

They have a minimum wage called ‘scale’. You can have a small role or a heftier one and still get paid the savme.
They want better scale for the lower end working actors.

There are residuals that are paid, generally small amounts when the movie or tv show get rebroadcast. What has been murky is what should the residuals be for streaming services. There’s also no box office numbers because its a monthly service.

Then it’s studios trying to get the rights to someone’s likeness, so they don’t have to pay the actor. They just pay a day’s work and get a computer do the work for them.

I feel like these comments were still complicated. Basically the actors aren’t getting paid a reasonable wage. When shows aired on cable, they made money based on that and maybe money for showing up to produce the show/ movie. When everything went to streaming services, there wasn’t a switch in how actors were being paid. So now we have all the shows on streaming services but the actors aren’t paid for that.

The writers are protesting because they had a similar pay structure but it was even worse. Then company’s wanted to use AI to write tv shows by feeding the AI scripts written by said writers. Which means they wouldn’t have to pay real human writers.
