Eli5: What is the stab around the chest that goes away after taking a deep breath? Why does it go away?

Generally it’s a muscle spasm or cramp. With any cramp the muscle is very tight (contracting) and so slowly and gently stretching it out can help to relax it to a loosened state. Breathing is generally slow and as we inhale the chest muscles are stretched.
