Generally it’s a muscle spasm or cramp. With any cramp the muscle is very tight (contracting) and so slowly and gently stretching it out can help to relax it to a loosened state. Breathing is generally slow and as we inhale the chest muscles are stretched.

I’ve experienced this for many years and it often scared the crap out of me until I was able to identify what I think I have been experiencing.
