I keep hearing people mention it, but have no clue what it actually is.

It’s a form of homeschooling that is totally child-directed rather than imposing curriculum on the student. You use the child’s natural interests to find opportunities to teach what they need to know.

For example, with a kid who loves constructing things you can use designing things as the basis of a math lesson, build a mini replica Great Wall of China as a history lesson, build bird houses or bee hives for biology “class,” etc.
